Due to the prohibition of Cannabis by the Federal classification, the American Medical Association (AMA), the largest organization of doctors, follows their lead and has taken an active voice against the use of Medical Marijuana. In 2013, they said that Marijuana is a “dangerous drug” and should not be legalized either for medical or recreational use and in 2015, they released a collaboration of studies pointing against the use of Cannabis.

A new group was announced on Monday, Doctors for Cannabis Regulation (DFCR) . Their mission is stated clearly, “Doctors for Cannabis Regulation serves as a voice for physicians who believe that cannabis prohibition has failed and that the misuse of Cannabis should be treated as a health issue rather than a criminal one. Through public education and support for changes in U.S. law, DFCR advocates for the legalization, taxation and—above all—effective regulation of Cannabis in the United States.”

The DFCR is a group that has come to their senses knowing many knowledgeable American physicians recognize:

  • Occasional use of Cannabis by healthy adults is generally benign, making its prohibition unnecessary
  • Cannabis is far less harmful for adults than alcohol and tobacco, which are both legal because of the impracticality of prohibiting so-called ‘soft’ drugs.
  • Cannabis can be harmful to minors, but prohibition doesn’t prevent children and teens from accessing the drug
  • The burden of Cannabis prohibition falls disproportionately upon communities of color and the nation’s poor

Doctors for Cannabis Regulation have identified three strategies for their mission

1) Prohibition of Cannabis and the Failed War On Drugs: Just the fact that the Government prohibits the use actually makes the problem worse.

2) Decriminalization of Marijuana: If we can not get legalization, we as a country needs to stop penalizing people with harsh penalties and move to decriminalize the use and possession of personal amounts.

3) Regulation of the Cannabis Market: This strategy calls for the legalization, regulation and taxation of the Cannabis Market by the Federal Government. Below are their regulation strategy points:

  • Government oversight of cannabis production, testing, distribution, and sales
  • Detailed labeling of cannabis products, including (but not limited to) THC and CBD levels, dosing information, and ingredients
  • Restrictions on marketing and advertising of cannabis products
  • A ban on cannabis packaging and advertising that targets or attracts underage users
  • Child-resistant packaging for cannabis products
  • Penalties for adults who allow diversion of cannabis to minors
  • Adult education about the use and misuse of cannabis
  • Preventive youth education about the risks of underage cannabis use
  • Taxation of the cannabis trade to fund research, education and substance abuse treatment

The Need of Re-Scheduling of Cannabis and American Medical Association’s Acceptance and Education

We need this medicine! The research is continually pointing to the fact that yes, Cannabis is a viable medicine to treat symptoms and conditions and in some cases cures illness.

The big problem with Cannabis and the Industry is Education and conveying its message. And people need guidance, they look at the so-called “experts” and they are telling them “NO!”

The re-scheduling and acceptance will allow for better Cannabis Patient education, consultation, treatment and RESULTS!
